Maintenance Appreciation Week 2025: Thank you Sam

Sam Black: Maintenance Appreciation Week 2025

We’re wrapping up Maintenance Appreciation Week by celebrating one more incredible team member who goes above and beyond to make a difference every day.

Meet Sam Black, Maintenance Technician at Discovery View in Port Townsend, Washington. Sam has worked hard to support residents, improve the property, and create a welcoming, well-maintained community. “I get a lot of satisfaction from coming up with solutions that make residents’ lives easier,” Sam shares. “They’re always so appreciative, and that means a lot.”

One of Sam’s recent projects showcases that commitment perfectly. After noticing residents struggling with the trash enclosure, he redesigned it to be more ADA-accessible, allowing tenants to dispose of trash more easily. “I had seen them struggle for months,” he says, “so I came up with a design to help.”

Portfolio Manager Tina Langdon shares that Sam’s creativity and ownership mindset have made a real impact. “Sam treats the property like his own home,” she says. “He built a new, ADA-compliant trash enclosure under budget and thought about how to make it easier for residents to use. He truly cares about them like family and takes pride in his work every single day.”

When a recent inspection revealed costly issues, Sam took initiative once again—working through repairs and exterior projects over the summer to bring everything up to the Guardian Standard.

“Living on-site gives me a sense of pride and ownership. I want the property to be clean and safe, not just for residents, but for my family and me as well.”

Tina adds, “I can’t imagine how we would have managed the past several months without Sam. His dedication to residents and his commitment to quality truly set him apart. We’re so fortunate to have him on our team.”

As we close out Maintenance Appreciation Week, we want to recognize Sam and every member of our Guardian maintenance team for the incredible work you do. Your care, professionalism, and problem-solving make all the difference in creating safe, welcoming communities.

Happy Maintenance Appreciation Week—you deserve it!
