Oregon’s largest law firm is, for the first time in 11 years, swapping out managing partners in its main office.
Van Valkenburg had forged a strong presence in Portland’s legal community in heading the 130-attorney Portland office. Stoel Rives attorneys specialize in myriad business categories, including bankruptcy, labor, energy, securities, commercial real estate and land use.
He helped oversee a move into the high-profile new Park Avenue West building in downtown Portland.
“About 18 months ago, I suggested to (Bob Van Brocklin, the firm’s then-managing partner who oversaw the firm’s national footprint) that once we moved into our new building, it would be a good time to make a change,” Van Valkenburg said. “I had been involved in our space planning and office move since about 2007, and I wanted to see us through the move. it’s a good time for a transition.
“Also, we have two very talented partners who are willing to assume my responsibilities.”
Van Valkenburg will continue practicing in the firm’s technology and intellectual property group. He’ll also remain head of the company’s antitrust compliance practice.
“Fortunately, I was able to continue practicing law during my time as office managing partner and will continue to do that going forward,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of activity in my group, so I expect to be busy with projects for clients of all sizes.”
